Lawn fertilization in North Metro Atlanta

Lawn fertilization that feeds the roots, not just the color.

Our red clay doesn't have much organic matter in it, and it's quick to lock up whatever you put down. So we feed Bermuda, Zoysia and Fescue on a slow-release schedule that builds thick grass over the season instead of a green flush that's gone in two weeks.

  • Bermuda and Zoysia: May to Sep
  • Fescue: Sep to Nov and Feb to Apr
  • Lime: fall, as needed
Lawn Fertilization on a North Georgia lawn
Why it matters here

North Georgia isn't a generic lawn.

Most lawns around here sit on packed red clay that drifts acidic over time. Dump a bag of fertilizer on that and most of it washes off or ties up in the soil before the roots ever see it. Slow-release feeding at the right time of year, with lime when a soil test says you need it, changes how much the grass can actually take in.

  • Slow-release nitrogen, so the lawn grows steady instead of in surges you have to mow twice a week
  • Potassium in the fall to deepen the roots and get the lawn through winter
  • Lime when a soil test calls for it, not just because it's on the truck
How we do it
  1. We start by looking at what you've got

Grass type, how much shade, where the water sits. If a lawn isn't responding the way it should, we pull a soil sample instead of guessing.

  2. We put it on the right schedule

Bermuda and Zoysia want to eat from green-up through late summer. Fescue wants it in the fall and spring. We don't mix those up.

  3. We feed it and leave you a note

Every visit, you'll know what went down and what to expect over the next couple of weeks.

  4. We adjust as the lawn tells us to

Color, thickness and how many weeds are showing up tell us what to change on the next round.

Questions about lawn fertilization

The ones we hear most.

Will my lawn green up right away?

Give it two to three weeks. Slow-release products build color gradually and then hold it, which is the whole point. If a lawn's really starved, we'll sometimes use a quicker starter on the first visit to get it going.

Is fertilizer safe for kids and pets?

Yes. Once it's been watered in or the granules have settled, usually the same day, the kids and the dog can have the yard back. We leave a flag and a note if there's any wait time.

Do you test the soil?

When we start a new lawn, or when one isn't responding the way it should, we pull a sample. The results tell us whether it needs lime and how much nitrogen to put down, so we're not guessing.
